I'm just going to take a few moments here to bitch a little about New England. If you like New England, and don't want to hear it then don't read this.
Yesterday morning when I awoke and stepped outside it was a beautiful, balmy 45 degrees. Now I know that many wouldn't consider 45 degrees to be beautiful or balmy, but considering the winter we've had, it was a very welcome change.
By noon, it was snowing. By 3:00 PM it was snowing so hard you couldn't see out the windows. By 5:00 PM there was 3-4 inches of snow that had the most disgusting, thick and mushy consistency. The wind had picked up to 20-30 mph and while scraping the ice and crap off of my car, my fingers were numb within minutes. After warming the car up I hit the road at about 5:30 PM and headed to the highway and ... stopped. The highway had not been plowed or sanded yet, and there were obvious issues with driving, because even at the 5-10 mph that the bumper-to-bumper traffic was moving, there were still folks sliding around. Now my commute is normally about 20 minutes, but last night, that turned into more than 1 1/2 hours. I finally arrived home (safe and aound) at around 7:10 PM. By that time, the temperature had dropped to 15 degrees.
I'd also like to mention that I live in a very small, older two-bedroom house on a small lake. The heating is provided by way of a kerosene heater, which normally does pretty well keeping up with the creeping cold. Last night however, the temperature just kept dropping and the wind kept picking up. As I'm listening to the news this morning they are saying that the winds were as high as 60 mph throughout the night. I think they might have gotten higher than that here. Every gust of wind sweeping across the lake slammed into the back of this little house so hard, the house would shake and I could actually feel the breeze as the wind was forcing it's way into every little nook and crack it could. No matter how high I set the heater, I could not get the house warmer than 62 degrees. (I normally keep it at around 76, I like it warm).
Now I'm sitting here, contemplating getting ready for work or calling in, because I don't want to step outside into what the weatherman is now saying is 0-5 degrees with a wind chill of up (or down) to -15 degrees. Why do people live here??? Why do I live here??? I know there are people who live in places colder than this, with worse conditions, but my question for them is Why do you live there???
