Today David Onstott confessed to the murder of 13 year old Sarah Lunde of Hillsborough County Florida.
The story can be found here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7535840/
The story mentions briefly that Onstatt a convicted rapist and registered sex offender had dated Sarah's mother. It also mentions that Sarah had returned on Friday from a church trip, a church which she attends by herself, with no other members of her family. It goes on to mention that when the family returned home to find the house empty and the doors wide open, they just assumed she had gone to a friend's house. The story then mentions that the family did not report her missing until Monday, THREE DAYS LATER!!!
What I'm wondering, is why the story is making no mention of charges of criminal neglect being brought up on Kelly May Lunde, the mother of Sarah Lunde? Although the story does not mention that Kelly is a working single mother, I must assume that's the case, since there's no mention of a father (and she's apparently scouring the registered sex offenders list for potential mates). I can certainly appreciate the difficulty of that situation.
However ... there is a certain responsibility of any parent, no matter what the financial, or domestic difficulties may be to make sure your child is safe. How is it that this woman thought it would be a good idea to bring a known rapist into the lives of her children? How is it that three days go by without alerting the authorities that you daughter is missing? Why is it that this girl had to find a sense of family and belonging in a church instead of within her own household?
