Weird claim by Dwight Yokum

So last night, I was watching the Daily Show with John Stewart, my all time favorite fake news show, and the guest was Dwight Yokum.

I'm not a fan of Country music, so I was not very interested in listening to the interview, but the man grabbed my attention, first by his apparent innability to maintain any sort of attention span at all (someone should really do a clinical study of adult ADD on this guy), and then by the claim that the NY Times ran an article with an incredible claim.

The claim was that Humans are not closest related to primates, but canines. His claim was that we are more closely related to our common pets that to chimpanzes!

This of course got me wondering, so I search far and wide on the internet and CANNOT find any evidence of such an article. If anyone knows of this article PLEASE leave a comment with a link, PLEASE! This would be absolutely amazing to me, but until I see actual scientific research on this, I'm going to just chock it up to the insane rambling of very strange man.

heheh, my wife and I had the same conversation. I did a quick search that night and came up with a recent story about the similarities between ancient *bear* dna and dog dna. If someone had ADD, or was chemically altered, they could possible have skimmed the headline and come up with that silliness. The headline? "DNA bearly different from modern dog", the summary from Google News search: Daily Review Online, CA on Jun 3, 2005
By Ian Hoffman, STAFF WRITER. In a prelude to decoding the DNA of Neanderthals, scientists have cracked the genetic code of an ancient ... "

He was probably talking about this article:

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/GENEALOGY-DNA/2003-09/1064592225

The article describes findings that the gene structure of dogs is closer to humans than that of MICE (not chimpanzees), despite common understanding that mice are closer to humans on the evolutionary timeline than dogs. This has been fueling the ongoing debate between creationists and evolutionists, not surprisingly. But the article says nothing about chimpanzees or any other primates. I'm not surprised either, given Dwight's display of attentive ability that night. So in other words, you're right, it was merely insane rambling.

Hilarious episode by the way. ;)

Now that makes perfect sense. While the domestic dog has evolved superficially due to breeding in the last few hundred years, it's genetic structure has changed very little from it's wild cousins.

The high matabolism, short life cycle and fast reproduction of the rodents would account for a much faster evolutionary process in a much shorter timescale.

I knew this guy was wonkers!

C'mon give the guy a pass for getting something mixed up that is so harmelss.  At least he is not out there berating the administration in the middle of a very serious war and providing additional fuel for the terrorists.

Christ, I hope that was a joking comment Dale. You can't possibly believe that criticism of a failed war policy is bad for the country and aiding terrorists.

Nothing could be more important than the voices of the people when the country is being run into the ground by a corrupt administration.

Whatever opinion you may have formulated about the President and his administration in the last few years, there can't POSSIBLY be people left who think his motivations were for the good of the country. Can there?

Democracy has an expiration date. It is nearing that time. I'm a republican due to my faith. I'm a realist because I know that throughout history, democracies or republics ( rome, greece.. etc... etc...) fail eventually.

Ouch. A republican due to your faith?

So, does your faith tell you that only people who can afford insurance should recieve health care?

Does your faith tell you that the richest of the rich should get better tax breaks than the poor?

Does your faith tell you that corporations should be making policy decisions and effectively running this country?

What the hell does faith have to do with politics?? NOTHING!!! And it shouldn't for that very reason.

Republicans pander to the religious for their votes, but what have they ever done for you? Have they EVER delivered?

Wake up!
